ROAD FREIGHT GUIDE

FTL vs LTL for Iran Freight

Choosing between FTL and LTL is mainly a question of shipment size, urgency, handling requirements and route economics.

What is FTL?

FTL (Full Truck Load) means the truck is dedicated to one shipment or customer. It is commonly considered when cargo volume is high, loading space is substantial or fewer handling points are preferred.

  • Dedicated vehicle capacity
  • Fewer consolidation and deconsolidation steps
  • Suitable for larger or operationally sensitive shipments

What is LTL or groupage?

LTL (Less Than Truck Load) combines compatible shipments from multiple customers. It can be efficient when a shipment does not justify a complete truck.

  • Useful for smaller commercial shipments
  • Cost is shared across consolidated cargo
  • Transit planning may include consolidation points

How to choose

The cheapest-looking option is not always the best operational choice. Dimensions, gross weight, stackability, cargo value, pickup location, delivery deadline and customs requirements should be reviewed together.

  • Use FTL when capacity, speed or reduced handling matters most
  • Use LTL/groupage when the shipment is smaller and timing allows consolidation
  • Request both options when the shipment sits between the two profiles

Compare the space the cargo actually needs

Provide dimensions for every packed unit, not just the number of pallets. Include protruding parts, packaging and any restriction on stacking. Two shipments with the same gross weight can require very different floor space. Tell the planner about loading equipment, access restrictions and cargo that must be kept separate. There is no single pallet-count threshold that makes FTL or LTL the right choice for every shipment.

Use the guide across relevant road routes

This comparison is not limited to Turkey. It also supports road-freight planning between Iran and Germany, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and China. Ask for the available FTL and LTL arrangements for the actual origin and destination; do not assume that every collection point has the same consolidation schedule. The links below lead to the relevant country routes. UAE services are air and sea, so the UAE is not included in this road comparison.

Ask the right timing question

Ask when collection can take place, whether consolidation is involved and what the estimated arrival covers. A dedicated truck does not by itself guarantee an arrival date or eliminate border and handling stages. If a production deadline is critical, state the required delivery date and discuss the practical options before choosing on price alone.
